Bobcat Soccer team ready for two home conference games

Women’s College Soccer

The Texas State soccer team will return home to host its first pair of Southland Conference games this season against Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls State at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. The Bobcats will face the SLC-east duo Friday night at a 7p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., respectively.

Texas State is 5-3-3 leading into the second week of conference play. The team played McNeese State to its fifth overtime match of the season, resulting in a 2-2 tie before moving on to Lamar on Sunday. Texas State’s defense held the Cardinals to just nine shots, three of which were on goal, but turned them all away to grab its sixth shutout of the season. Meanwhile, the offense posted four goals in the win.

Southeastern is 6-3-1 on the season, with three of its victories occurring on the road. However, last week, the Lady Lions dropped both games in the first week against league opponents, falling 1-0 to both Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State.

“There has always been a good rival in place against Texas State and Southeastern,” head coach Kat Conner said. “The stakes will be even higher with this team coming in having lost both games last weekend. They will be looking for the turnaround win, so we will have to fight against their mental toughness.”

Kristin McDonald who has tallied 17 points to date, scoring seven goals and three assists, leads the Lady Lions. The team posts a 37-7 goal margin against opponents.

Following Friday’s game, Texas State will take a single day of recuperation before battling Nicholls.

“Cindy Piper (NSU head coach) does a great job at keeping her student-athletes inspired and motivated,” said Conner. “They lost the first pair of conference games as well and will be looking for their first win when we face them.”

The Lady Colonels are struggling this season with a 2-9-0 overall record. The team has not posted a win since Aug in their 5-1 victory at Texas Southern. Kaity Mattsson has scored five of the Lady Colonels’ 15 goals this season to head the offense.

“The biggest challenge we will face over the weekend is coming back for our Sunday game,” Conner said. “We need to give everything we have on Friday and get into a routine that allows us to gain our strength back on one day of rest, and then be prepared to finish the weekend on Sunday.”

The series is tied between Texas State and Southeastern, 8-8-2, and the Bobcats are unbeaten against Nicholls, 14-0.
