SMHS places 10 on 17-4A teams

San Marcos — The District 27-4A football All-District team was recently released as San Marcos had 10 players mention on the talent-ladened squad. However, unlike seasons past, San Marcos had just one player earn first-team honors.

Senior cornerback Aaron Canady was the Rattlers’ lone first-team selection, while Blake Bagley was a second-team selection on offense and defense at tight end and linebacker. Also receiving second-team honors were senior offensive lineman Mark Line, while senior Andrew Cortez was a second-team section as a special teams player.

San Marcos’ honorable mention selections included center Derek Dixon, offensive lineman Evaristo Vasquez, linebacker Jeremy Gonzales, running back Andre Ray, defensive end Luis Salazar and defensive back Dorian Perez.

“I thought we were represented pretty well considering how we did in district,” SMHS head coach Steve Van Nest said. “Of course, every coach feels like they should have more players represented and I’m no different.”

The winner of the district’s Offensive MVP winner was no surprise, as Alamo Heights senior quarterback, Drew Allen, who has committed to play at Oklahoma next season, was an unanimous choice as MVP.

The district’s Defensive MVP honor went Schertz-Clemens’ defensive back Sean Porter.

Kerrville-Tivy’s Colton Palmer and Steele’s Jake Trevino were first-team selections at quarterback, while Clemens’ Charles Ross, Steele’s Malcolm Brown and Boerne Champion’s Josh Wray all received first-team honors at running back.

Steele’s Michael Robinson and Alamo Heights’ Victor Gibbons were unanimous selections at tight end, while Tivy senior Logan Vick was a unanimous selection at wide receiver. Vick was also named first-team kicker.

Steele offensive tackler Matt Goetz, a senior, was the only unanimous first-team selection among offensive linemen.

Alamo Heights junior defensive end Forest Hagar was the only unanimous first-team selection on defense.
