Del Valle — One would think a softball coach that saw her team seven-run win to be quite satisfied.
But San Marcos head coach Cathy McBride isn’t your typical coach, and with the high expectations she has for her Lady Rattlers, one might understand why she wasn’t smiling big after her team’s 9-2 win over Del Valle Friday night.
The last time the two teams met San Marcos rolled off eight runs in the first inning en route to a run-rule win. It wasn’t quite as easy this time.
“We beat them soundly last time and a I think with our girls remembering that, they had a tough time getting motivated and showing a lot of intensity,” McBride said. “We came out a little too relaxed and even though we won 9-2, we just didn’t hit as well and as hard as we usually do.”
San Marcos failed to score in the top of the first, but the offense got a little spark after watching senior pitcher Dawn Villegas accomplish a peculiar feat in the bottom of the first, striking out four hitters in one inning, thanks in part to a passed ball on a third strike.
The Lady Rattlers then posted three runs in the second and three more in the third to gain command of the game. The SMHS offense collected a total of 14 hits, while adding another run in the fourth and two in the top of the fifth to secure the win.
Villegas went the distance for the Lady Rattlers to improve her record to 5-3 on the season, as she finished with 11 strikeouts, while allowing one run on two hits.
“She was pretty impressive at the start, but she started to slow down a little at the end,” McBride said. “It’s been a long week for everyone with us playing three games this week, and I think she and everyone else got a little tired towards the end.”
Villegas helped her own cause by going 3-for-5 at the plate, while her younger sister, Megan Villegas, as 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. April Cervantes went 3-for-5 and Sarah Perez went 2-for-5 as every San Marcos batter but collected a hit.
The win keeps the Lady Rattlers (22-8, 5-2 17-4A) in third place in the district standings, one game behind second-place Elgin and two games behind first-place Lockhart. San Marcos will get a chance to move into a tie for second when the team hosts Elgin for a 7 p.m. game Monday night.
