Women's College Basketball: Mattox to transfer to Oklahoma Baptist

By Tyler Mayforth

San Marcos — Gabriell Mattox is headed to her third school in as many years.

The Texas State forward, who transferred from the University of Texas, will be leaving the program. Mattox informed Bobcat head women’s basketball coach Suzanne Fox at their end-of-the-year meeting.

Mattox will play for Oklahoma Baptist in 2009-10.

“I meet with every kid six times a year and then at the end of the year, you evaluate and move forward,” Fox said. “We went over all the aspects we could and both agreed it would be a better fit for her somewhere else.”

Mattox’s departure leaves a big hole in the Texas State offense.

She led the Bobcats in scoring last season with 12.1 points per game (15.2 in Southland Conference action). Mattox topped Texas State in scoring nine times last season, including a season-high 25 points against Southeastern Louisiana.

She averaged 6.7 rebounds per game to lead Texas State and appeared in all 28 games, starting 24. Mattox played the most minutes for the Bobcats, averaging 29 per game.

Mattox paced the Bobcats on the defensive end as well, recording 41 steals. She got to the free-throw line 86 times, making 65 shots (75.6 percent), in turn showing no fear in attacking the basket.

Fox now must fill Mattox’s shoes with another possible scoring threat. Mattox was one of two players who averaged more than 10 points per game (Kim Cessna was the other) and both are now gone.
