San Marcos — The roster might have been small, but San Marcos Academy’s Middle School girls basketball team had plenty to spare in spirit and effort.
The six-girl squad pulled off a second-place finish in its district tournament recently and saw two players picked as tournament MVP’s.
Just three points separated the Lady Bears from being the champions of their Christian Athletic League of San Antonio (CALSA) district as they fell to Hill Country Christian in the championship match. Prior to that game, the Lady Bears took out Rainbow Hills and Gateway to advance in the CALSA tournament.
Named as MVP’s for the season were San Marcos day students Emma Hartsock and Shelby Teis. Other team members were Jamie Lambert, Hannah Paul, Megan Pizana and Madison Wagar. Kendall Nighbert was team manager, and Jamie Boshart was coach of the young team.
“The season started out a little rough, with one win followed by five losses,” Boshart said. “But it ended up really well. Even when we weren’t winning games, their attitudes were great. Then they turned it around and pulled out six wins at the end of the season, which was just amazing. I’m very proud of the girls, and to have just six players and no big injuries was really a blessing.”
Including their district tournament games, the Lady Bears had a 6-4 district record and a 7-6 overall mark on the season.
The Middle School boys, under Coach Jimmy Ford, took their 8-8 record (5-3 in district) into the CALSA district tournament Feb. 5-6.
Playing in Division I, the Bears lost to San Antonio Town East and to New Braunfels Christian Academy.
