High School Football: Riley joins coaching staff at SM Academy

From staff reports

San Marcos — San Marcos Academy recently announced the addition of Don Riley as an assistant football and strength and conditioning coach.

Riley, who coached for the past 16 years at Hays, will join SMA’s head football coach Les Davis and assistant coaches Toby Wade, Peter Garza and Barrett Matthews for the 2010-11 football season. Riley retired in December from Hays, where his duties included P.E., health, eighth- and ninth-grade coaching, varsity football, strength and conditioning and was the head track and field coach.

“I am looking forward to the opportunities that I will have working with the staff and students of the San Marcos Academy,” Riley said in a school release.

Prior to working at Hays, Riley spent 10 years coaching and teaching at San Marcos High School, his alma mater. Riley is also a graduate of Southwest Texas State University, now Texas State University.

“We are really excited to have another coach with the level of experience that Don has on board here at the Academy,” SMA athletic director and assistant football coach Toby Wade said. “I believe our players will respond well to his personality and to his coaching style.”

The Academy will kick off pre-season workouts Aug. 9, ending with an intrasquad scrimmage Aug. 14.

The Bears will play their first home game Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m. against Brooks Academy.
