College Baseball: Atwood's big bat fuels State at Tech

Lubbock — The Bobcats’ hit parade traveled to Lubbock and Bret Atwood was the Marshall as Texas State handed Texas Tech a 13-7 loss at Tech’s Dan Law Field Friday night.

The Texas State junior center fielder erupted with a 5-for-6 night at the plate, connecting for a double, four singles and four RBIs. He also stole two bases and scored three runs.

The win snapped a four-game road losing streak for the Bobcats (9-6) and extended the Red Raiders’ (8-10) losing streak to five games. The all-time series is now even at 6-all.

The Red Raiders took the early lead as a pair of wild pitches helped Tech claim a 2-0 advantage. But the Bobcat bat avenged the mistakes with four runs in the next inning.

Jeff McVaney, Daniel Neumann and Tyler Sibley each came through with  consecutive base hits to load the bases with one out, allowing Atwood to launch a three-run double to deep right center.

Atwood advanced to third on the throw to the plate, as Kyle Livingstone followed with an RBI single to give Texas State a 4-2 advantage.

Tech knotted the score with a two-run home run from Kevin Whitehead in the bottom of the fourth, but the Bobcats countered by scoring three runs off three hits in the top of the fifth to take a 7-4 lead.

Texas State never trailed after the fifth inning, outscoring Tech 4-2 the rest of the way for the 13-7 win.

Atwood extended his hit streak to nine games as Texas State collected 17 hits all together. Sibley, Shaun Garcia, Jeff McVaney and Daniel Neumann each had two hits in the win.

Texas State used six pitchers with none surrendering more than two runs. Mitchell Pitts (1-0) was credited with his first win of the season, going 2 1/3 innings, while allowing one run off four hits with one walk.

Covey Morrow and McVaney pitched over an inning in relief and held Tech scoreless.

The Bobcats’ are back in action this weekend when the team visits rival Sam Houston State for a three-game Southland Conference series in Huntsville. It will be the two teams’ first meeting since Sam Houston beat the Bobcats 7-1 in the 2009 SLC Tournament.
