San Antonio —
With a week off to prepare, the San Marcos Academy boys track team anticipates a strong showing at the TAPPS District 3-4A track meet Apr. 23.
The Bears placed third this past weekend in the Maroon Relays at San Antonio Christian. They were outrun by two of the larger 5A teams in the meet, which included 13 other TAPPS schools.
“We would have placed higher, but we didn't have a strong showing in the longer distance races,” SMA head coach Kelia Price said. “We feel good about the district meet, though, and expect that several of our athletes will eventually qualify for state.”
Michael Latham continued his streak of strong showings with first place finishes in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Latham also anchored the 4 x 100 relay team to a second place finish, along with Brady Wickersham, Josh McIntyre and Anthony Richardson.
McIntyre, who owned the 300-meter hurdles in the Bears' last two meets, once again took first place in that event.
Wickersham leapt to first place as well in the high jump, an event in which he consistently performs well.
Another top finisher for the Bears was John Nealon, who took first in the 800-meter run. Aubrey Oswalt also had a strong showing, with a third place finish in the 400-meter dash, while Mark Hamm took fourth in the triple jump.
On the field, John Ferguson had a fourth place finish in shot put, and Estevan Gutierrez took fifth in discus.
The girls team, consisting primarily of freshmen, competed in the JV category, where they ended up with a first place finish in the 4 x 100 meter relay. That team included Mallaree Kent, Kayla Chandler, Oby Okoye, and Jackie Oglesby.
Also placing for the Bears was Rebecca Cox, who took fourth in shot put.
