San Marcos —
After defeating the Seguin Lady Matadors, 38-29, the San Marcos Lady Rattlers improved their overall record to 21-8 and 4-6 in district play.
“It’s a win, we’ll take it,” San Marcos head coach Christina Jamerson. “We told the girls during practice yesterday and then again today, don’t underestimate them.”
The Lady Rattlers won the tip-off, but immediately turned the ball over within the first five seconds of the first quarter. However, the Rattlers used a 6-0 run against Seguin to end the first quarter with a 7-6 lead.
“It’s the turnovers we’re trying to change,” Jamerson said.
San Marcos held the Lady Matadors to eight points in the second quarter while they scored 12, six of which were from 3-pointers by senior guard Paula Stover and freshman guard Bailey Hill.
The third quarter opened slowly as the Lady Rattlers scored their first couple of points from free throws by Hill with two minutes, 37 seconds remaining. From then on, San Marcos went on a 6-0 run as Seguin only scored three points from free throws.
The Lady Rattlers were 13-of-26 from the free-throw line, eight of which were made during the fourth quarter to keep them ahead.
“In the end, we came with a win,” Jamerson said. “This was the only game before playoffs and we needed to come prepared.
“Seguin came at us and picked it up. They could’ve easily backed down, but they didn’t. You have to respect them.”
San Marcos also decided to try a few new things, such as putting five guards in for the first time during the last 30 seconds of the fourth quarter.
“They have speed,” Jamerson said of the guards. “We wanted to see them drive and attack.”
San Marcos will face either San Antonio-Churchill or San Antonio-Reagan in the bi-district round of the Class 5A playoffs.
