San Antonio — Close, but yet so far away.
The Texas State women’s basketball team’s losing ways continued Wednesday night as the Bobcats suffered a 70-59 to Texas-San Antonio at the UTSA Convocation Center.
It was the Bobcats’ seventh consecutive loss, as State is now winless after six Southland Conference games. Texas State fell to 4-13 overall.
The Bobcats were able to trim what was an 11-point UTSA lead at the half to two points in the second frame, but couldn’t even the score. Verinus Kalu closed the Roadrunners’ lead to 54-52 when she canned a 12-foot jump shot with 6:47 left in the game.
Aimee Hilburn tried to put the Bobcats on top with 3-pointer that was off the mark, then found herself with the chance to even the score when she broke free on a fast-break lay-up. But the left-handed shot was too strong, allowing UTSA to cling to its 2-point lead.
That would be as close as Texas State would get, as UTSA retained the momentum and held off the Bobcats for the win.
“We got our opportunities, but we have got to step up and hit the important shot when we need it,” Texas State head coach Suzanne Fox said. “We got good looks at the basket, but we couldn’t get the pressure shots when we needed them.”
