College Tennis: Penn State too much for the Bobcats

San Marcos — The Texas State women’s tennis team suffered its first loss in eight matches when the Bobcats fell, 6-1 to  Penn State Wednesday at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.

Nyssa Peele scored Texas State’s lone team point when she defeated Sarah Henderson 6-3, 1-6, 4-3 in the fifth-seeded singles match.

The Nittany Lions won the doubles points as they earned victories in all three matches.

Petra Januskova and Maria Prishiyak teamed to beat Andrea Giraldo and Melissa Hadad in the top doubles match 8-7.

In the other matches, Sarah Lotto and Amy Simidian defeated Gabriella Rojas and Mariana Perez, 8-0, while Lauren McCarthy and Michaela Stracar defeated Kiki Kruse and Nyssa Peele 8-5 in the other match.

In singles action, the Bobcats played without their top player Andrea Giraldo. As a result, Januskova defeated Hadad 6-2, 6-1 in the top singles match for Penn State.

In the second-seeded match, Simidian defeated Rojas 6-1, 6-0, while McCarthy won the third-seeded match over Perez 6-1, 7-5.

In the number-four match, Kruse suffered a 6-1, 6-2 loss against Prishiyak, and Mariana Charalambous suffered a hard-fought loss in the number-six match, 3-6, 6-4, 7-10.

The loss dropped Texas State’s overall record to 8-3 this season.

The Bobcats, who own a 4-0 in Southland Conference play, will return to league action Saturday, when the team hosts Texas-Arlington at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
