High School Tennis: San Marcos hosting Class 3A tennis tournament

From staff reports

San Marcos — This weekend will be a great time to go out and watch some great youth tennis, as San Marcos hosts hundreds of high school netters and their families during the Texas Tennis Coaches Association's Class 3A State Championship Tournament Friday and Saturday.

Hosted by the Central Texas Tennis Academy and the TTCA, the tournament will feature the best Class 3A team tennis players in the state. The two-day tournament began today.

“This is a great opportunity to show off San Marcos to folks from across the state,” said Mark Gonzales, Central Texas Tennis Academy director. “We're expecting hundreds of players, along with their families, to stay in San Marcos over the weekend. Many will be on spring break, so we hope they will stay longer.”

Friday and Saturday also bring opportunities for San Marcos residents to see some of the best players in the state in action. Local spectators are welcome.

“There will be some amazing high school tennis going on. It's fun to watch,” Gonzales,

The 16 teams will be playing matches on Friday and Saturday from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and then again at 1:30 p.m. at San Marcos High School, Goodnight Middle School, Dripping Springs High School, Wimberley High School, Seguin High School, Texas Lutheran University, Newk's Tennis Academy, and New Braunfels High School.

Between CTTA and the San Marcos CISD Tennis Program, which has earned back-to-back district championships, San Marcos is establishing itself as a youth tennis destination.

Later this month San Marcos will host the annual Embassy Suites Tournament, which attracts numerous high school teams and their families.

In June, San Marcos will host a United States Tennis Association ZAT Tournament that could attract as many as 500 players. The ZAT tournament, hosted by CTTA, will be June 12-13 at tennis facilities in San Marcos and the surrounding areas.

“People love to come to San Marcos,” said Gonzales. “This ZAT tournament is significant because of the economic impact of so many people staying in San Marcos, but also because our San Marcos youth tennis players will get to play in a high-level tournament on their own turf.”

CTTA offers lessons, local youth programs, league play and other tennis-related programming. For more information, visit www. centraltexastennisacademy.com, e-mail centraltexastennisacademy@yahoo.com or call 512-626-2051.
