High School Football: New look for the Bears

San Marcos — San Marcos Academy football will be sporting a new look when it hits the field this month.

The team helmets will feature a revised more modern bear logo and jerseys that reflect a team with a true mission on and off the field.

The logo keeps the school colors in focus that are derived from the mountain laurel, forest green and purple.

The team will go from green helmets to a high gloss black with purple facemask and green middle striping.

The team will also be sporting new jerseys this year with all black pants and jerseys that resemble those from Texas Christian University with purple and black features and “Bears” monogrammed across the chest.

“We are excited to unveil the new look for Bears football as we prepare for some great games coming up for the 2009 season,” San Marcos Academy head coach Brian Gaylor said.

Assisting Gaylor this year will be assistant coaches Dr. Byron Robinson, Barrett Matthews, Kelia Price and Athletic Director Toby Wade.

“As we look forward to an exciting time for football at SMA, it is only fitting that we unveil a new jersey design, which our team will wear, that has an eye to the future but also celebrates our long-standing tradition and heritage,” Wade said.

The jersey’s composition remains largely unchanged since the last version but the look is more “retro-futuristic.”

Opening day for the Bears is Aug. 28 versus the Medina Bobcats at home in San Marcos.
