High School Baseball: Rattlers face Hays

San Marcos — San Marcos wanted a tough non-district schedule to prepare itself for the long haul in District 17-4A.

So, like any coach would in that situation, Bryan Webb set up one of the toughest slates in recent memory.

The Rattlers hosted an extremely tough CenturyLink Rattler Classic, traveled to Brenham to face the No. 1 team in Class 4A (among others) and then wrapped up with a loaded Austin ISD tournament last weekend.

San Marcos kept pace at home, struggled in Brenham, but bounced back in Austin. The Rattlers went 3-2 at Nelson Field and posted wins against Eagles Pass, Marble Falls and Austin-Lanier.

With the wins, San Marcos inched its overall record to 9-8.

“We got back to a winning record this week, which is what we set our goal for,” Rattlers head coach Bryan Webb said. “It’s been a tough run for us because there are not any patsies on our schedule.”

Tonight, San Marcos will get a good idea of whether the arduous non-district schedule worked when it travels to Hays.

The Rebels also played in the Austin ISD tournament and went 3-1. Hays wasn’t shy about scoring runs, as the squad put up 12 against Bastrop and Eagle Pass and then 11 in its game with Dripping Springs.

Overall, the Rebels are 8-4-1 and must be the odds-on favorite to win another district championship, if history is to be believed.

If the Rattlers want to prove their non-district schedule pushed them in the right direction and that they are a team to beat in 17-4A, tonight is the time to do that.
