Boerne —
Texas State head coach Doug Davalos took a gamble in welcoming former Kentucky forward A.J. Stewart into his program.
Twelve games into Stewart’s first season as a member of the Bobcats, Davalos decided to step away from the table. Davalos confirmed Stewart has been dismissed from the team due to an undisclosed reason.
“A.J. is no longer with the team,” Davalos said. “We’re going to move forward with the players we have and that’s all we can do.”
Stewart appeared in eight of Texas State’s 12 games, averaging 9.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. His final game was Dec. 16 against Texas Southern where he scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds in 22 minutes.
Coming into the season, there were questions as to Stewart’s academic standing and cohesiveness with the Bobcats. Stewart worked hard during the summer to gain eligibility but those within the program, including former players, questioned his desire on the court.
“What you saw at the beginning of this season and throughout it was why so many schools stayed away from A.J. when it was originally known that he wanted to transfer,” a source close to Stewart’s recruitment said. “He burned a lot of bridges in leaving Kentucky and then once Central Florida backed out, he only had Texas State, Kent State, Murray State and Middle Tennessee State left.”
No one, though, doubted Stewart’s athletic ability. He was the fifth-ranked prospect out of Florida in the Class of 2007 as rated by Rivals.com.
Stewart’s best game at Texas State came against Our Lady of the Lake University where he filled the box score with 12 points, nine rebounds, six blocks and five assists in 25 minutes.
