High School Football: LHS visits laboring Crockett Cougars

Kyle — With last week’s win at San Antonio-Edison, the Lehman Lobos were able to successfully bounce back from a disappointing season-opening loss at against TAPPS power Austin-St. Michael’s.

And while a coach would never argue with how a win is obtained, it’s probably safe to say LHS head coach Steve Davis would have liked to have seen it happen in a less dramatic fashion.

A 20-yard run from Jaylon Hardaway late in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference as the Lobos held off Edison for a 28-21 win. Tonight, Lehman is hoping for a little less drama against Austin-Crockett, a team which has traditionally struggled at the Class 4A and 5A levels.

The Cougars looked like they were on the turnaround by winning their final three games last year to claim District 26-4A’s fourth playoff spot. But after opening the 2010 season with blowout losses on the road at Dripping Springs (49-0) and Caldwell (63-0), it looks like it could be another long season for the Cougars.

Look for Lehman to try to control the flow of the game with a strong running game, led by Charles Williams and quarterback Harvest Trammell. Last week the Lobos ran the ball 35 times for 234 yards to dominate the time of possession. Trammell led the team with 71 yards on 13 carries, while Williams rushed for 63 yards on eight attempts, including a 33-yard touchdown run.

Lehman also enjoyed some success with its passing game, throwing for 102 yards and two touchdowns against Edison. Peter Gutierrez was at the receiving end of two scoring passes from Matthew Anguiano to give Lehman an early 14-0 lead against the Bears.

Crockett brings in a team that managed only 213 total yards against Class 3A Caldwell, while allowing 416 yards on defense. The week before the Cougars totaled only 175 yards of offense while allowing Dripping Springs to rack up 391 total yards.

Tonight’s kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Austin ISD’s Burger Stadium.
