The San Marcos Academy Bears are growing up this season under Les Davis. The team is returning several key players from last years playoff run but the experience of SMA head coach Les Davis is allowing the players to mature and grow as student athletes.
The team held their first intrasquad scrimmage Saturday and the players are starting to gel as a team as they become a more cohesive unit on both offense and defense.
“We saw some good and bad things today, the team is showing good effort but the bad is making small mistakes,” Davis said. “We are still filling some holes and we will continue to work on the little things as a team before the opener.”
Both quarterbacks Jonathan Powell and Aubrey Oswalt moved the ball well with crisp passes and showed the ability to read defenses in the Davis’ new offensive schemes.
Offensive linemen Cody Watson, Cameron Whitehead, Sabas Castillo and Estevan Gutierrez seem to be the glue for the line heading into this weeks scrimmage in Austin.
Defensively, the Bears first squad kept the heat on the offense and the secondary looked strong with good play by John Myers, Austin Hay and Whitehead. Whitehead is expected to garner several postseason awards and be a leader for his senior campaign.
Special teams are still a work in progress, but kickers Austin Hay, Josh McIntyre and Memo Borrego continue to battle but Borrego a Monterey, was a leader on the Bears soccer playoff team last year and appears to have a leg up.
The Bears return to psuedo-game action Thursday as they travel to Austin to take on the Crusaders of St. Andrews in their first official scrimmage of the season. St. Andrews will be led this season by former Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer from Brigham Young University and NFL fame.
