San Marcos —
The first Bobcat Live Chat of the 2010 season was held last Wednesday night. In case you missed it, here are a few excerpts from the chat for your perusal.
We’ll hold the next chat Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
We’re expecting a big crowd with the Texas State season opener Saturday night, so drop by early and be sure to join the conversation.
Comment from James: How’s Tyler coming along? Any chance he’ll redshirt?
Tyler Mayforth: James, I’m doing well, thanks for asking. Just kidding. Arndt is splitting time with the No. 1 offense and needs a lot of work on his mechanics (footwork, arm slot, etc). I don’t see him redshirting because if Hawkins struggles, they’ll go with Arndt before Hill.
Comment from Guest: Are you worried about the performance of the QBs? Hawkins has had time to learn the system and work on things this summer, but seems to be inconsistent. Arndt, while still young, doesn’t seem to be lighting it up as expected.
Tyler Mayforth: Guest, good question. The Bobcats are going to as far as the QBs take them in 2010. If Texas State doesn’t have consistent play from Hawkins (or Arndt), look for opposing defenses to stack the box and challenge the Bobcats to beat them through the air. In the past, it’s a bet you’d take 100 percent of the time. Now, not so much.
Comment from Abe: Have you noticed a different feel around practice this year compared to last year? (ie; confidence, excitement, enthusiasm, swagger, etc.)
Tyler Mayforth: Abe, practice this year seems twice as intense as it was last year. I’ve seen some big hits already that were absent in fall camp last season. The Bobcats definitely have confidence, enthusiasm and swagger, but that’s to be expected. We’ll see how they are after the first few weeks of the season.
Comment from Lancer: How have DeChe Milburn and Cody Matthews looked so far? Redshirt or PT for Milburn?
Tyler Mayforth: Lancer, Milburn and Matthews are solid athletes. Matthews put on a lot of weight during his redshirt season but is stuck behind Griggs on the depth chart, so don’t expect to see too much out of him. Milburn is battling some issues with the NCAA Clearninghouse right now, so it’s looking more like a redshirt for him.
Comment from bokoloko: We saw a QB leave the team during the QB battle...how do all the running back feel about splitting the PT... we seem to have a good amount of good RBs.
Tyler Mayforth: bokoloko, from what I’ve heard and seen, the RBs know what they’re getting into. McCloud obviously thought he’d be the No. 1 guy from the first day because he transferred from an FBS program and that didn’t happen.
Comment from ak711: With the passing game a big question mark, how does the running game look so far compared to previous seasons?
Tyler Mayforth: ak711, thanks for checking in. It’s looked weaker than previous seasons (and that’s not a bad thing). They’re getting holes, but the D is filling them up. Once they play someone else, those holes should lead to some big gains.
