Fishing Report

Here is the weekly fishing report as compiled for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for Aug. 26. (Report also available on Web as www.txfishing.com.)

CENTRAL

BASTROP: Water clear. Black bass are fair on chartreuse spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and Rat-L-Traps. Crappie are good on minnows and white tube jigs. Channel and blue catfish are good on shrimp, liver, and nightcrawlers. Yellow catfish are slow.

BELTON: Water clear; 89 degrees; 7.79' low. Black bass are good on spinnerbaits in coves near structure. Hybrid striper are good on live shad. White bass are slow. Crappie are good on minnows. Channel and blue catfish are good on hot dogs. Yellow catfish are slow.

BROWNWOOD: Water stained; 89 degrees; 6.87' low. Black bass are good on Bass Hogg spinnerbaits near the docks, and on Pig Sticker Shaky Heads with Grande Bass 4" watermelon red Trickster Worms near the docks and rocks and over brush piles in 12-15 feet. Hybrid striper are fair trolling and drifting shad. White bass are good on Li'l Fishies and Persuader crankbaits off lighted docks at night. Crappie are good on Li'l Fishies and minnows over brush piles in 10-18 feet. Channel catfish are fair on trotlines baited with cut bait and chicken livers in 12-20 feet. Yellow catfish are good on trotlines baited with cut bait and chicken livers.

BUCHANAN: Water clear; 88 degrees; 28.12' low. Black bass are fair on JDC Skip-N-Pop topwaters, watermelon flukes, Rat-L-Traps, and watermelon red Whacky Sticks at first light along break lines of flats in Morgan and Silver Creeks. Striped bass are good on Spoiler Shads plastic swim baits and drifting live bait around Lighthouse Point at first light on the surface. White bass are fair but small on Tiny Traps and 2" plastic swim baits in clear water. Crappie are fair on pink/white and chartreuse Curb's crappie jigs and live minnows in clear water. Channel catfish are good on liver, minnows, and dipbait. Yellow and blue catfish are very good on goldfish and perch upriver.

CANYON LAKE: Water clear; 88 degrees; 15.71' low. Black bass are fair to good on JDC Skip-N-Pop topwaters, watermelon Whacky Sticks, and Texas rigged blue flake worms in flooded bushes and grass banks at sunrise and all day under cloud cover, and on drop shot Devil's Tongues along break lines and ledges. Striped bass are fair trolling Giza 4 crankbaits over and around humps and jigging 1oz. Pirk Minnows at daylight. White bass are slow. Smallmouth bass are fair on smoke JDC grubs and 3/16oz. pumpkin Curb's jigs with matching JDC craw trailers in 12-25 feet early. Crappie are slow. Channel catfish are slow. Yellow and blue catfish are good on live bait.

COLEMAN: Water clear; 88 degrees; 8.48' low. Black bass are fair on chartreuse and watermelon Rat-L-Traps and Carolina rigged soft plastics. Hybrid striper are slow. Crappie are good on minnows and green tube jigs. Channel and blue catfish are good on stinkbait and shrimp. Yellow catfish are slow.

COLORADO RIVER: (At Colorado Bend State Park) Water clear. Black bass are slow. Striped bass are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are slow. Catfish are good on trotlines baited with perch, and from the bank on rod and reel baited with perch.

FAYETTE: Water clear; 92 degrees. Black bass are fair on shad colored swim baits, Zara Spooks, and Carolina rigged soft plastics in 14-18 feet. Channel and blue catfish are fair on juglines baited with cut shad.

GRANBURY: Water clear; 3.55' low. Black bass are fair on blue/green Rat-L-Traps and watermelon soft plastics. Striped bass are fair on chartreuse/white striper jigs. White bass are slow. Crappie are fair on minnows. Catfish are good on stinkbait, liver, and live bait.

GRANGER: Water murky; 86 degrees; 4.20' low. Black bass to 6 pounds are good on red shad Power Worms in 36 feet. White bass are fair on slab spoons and Rat-L-Traps along shallow roadbeds early and late. Crappie are good on minnows and chartreuse jigs in 4-12 feet. Blue catfish to 20 pounds are good on prepared baits, Zote soap, and shad. Yellow catfish are slow.

LBJ: Water stained; 88 degrees; 0.36' low. Black bass are fair on watermelon Curb's jigs and perch colored crankbaits in 6-15 feet, and flipping green pumpkin tubes and Texas rigged flukes at docks and laydowns. Striped bass are fair on Li'l Fishies at night. White bass are fair on Li'l Fishies at night. Crappie are good on Curb's crappie jigs and live minnows over brush piles. Channel catfish are good on liver and dipbait. Yellow and blue catfish are very good on trotlines baited with goldfish and perch.

NAVARRO MILLS: Water fairly clear; 89 degrees; 1.68' low. Black bass are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are good but small on minnows and orange/chartreuse and pearl jigs off docks in Liberty Hill Park early. Channel catfish are good on stinkbait around stickups baited with sour grain in 34 feet. Blue catfish are slow. Yellow catfish are slow.

PROCTOR: Water stained; 89 degrees; 7.07' low. Black bass are good on white spinnerbaits and minnows. Striped bass are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are slow. Channel and blue catfish are good on shrimp and shad. Yellow catfish are fair on shrimp and shad.

SOMERVILLE: Water murky; 91 degrees; 3.74' low. Black bass are slow. Hybrid striper are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are slow. Perch are excellent on worms. Channel and blue catfish are excellent on trotlines and juglines baited with cut shad. Yellow catfish are slow.

STILLHOUSE: Water clear; 90 degrees; 3.56' low. Black bass are good on crankbaits, minnows, and soft plastic worms. White bass are slow. Crappie are slow. Channel and blue catfish are fair on stinkbait. Yellow catfish are slow.

TRAVIS: Water stained; 90 degrees; 48.23' low. Black bass are fair on chrome chuggers and red shad worms in 18-35 feet. Striped bass are slow. White bass are good on chrome chuggers and silver spoons in 5-25 feet. Crappie are slow. Channel and blue catfish are good on nightcrawlers and cut shad in 2835 feet. Yellow catfish are slow.

WALTER E. LONG: Water clear; 93 degrees. Black bass are slow. Hybrid striper are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are slow. Channel and blue catfish are good on minnows, shrimp, and nightcrawlers. Yellow catfish are slow.

WHITNEY: Water stained; 12.48' low. Black bass are fair on watermelon Rat-L-Traps, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits. Striped bass are slow. White bass are fair on minnows. Crappie are fair on minnows. Catfish are good on shrimp and liver.

SOUTH

AMISTAD: Water clear; 86 degrees; 1.08' low. Black bass are good on topwaters, soft plastics, jigs, and drop shots. Striped bass are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are slow. Catfish are good on cheesebait, shrimp, and nightcrawlers in 8-20 feet early. Yellow catfish are fair on trotlines, juglines, and drop lines baited with live perch. Everyone in the boat must have a Mexico fishing license (if fishing the Mexico side) whether fishing or not.

BRAUNIG: Water stained; 88 degrees. Black bass are fair on crankbaits and dark soft plastic worms in reeds and along the jetty and near the dam. Striped bass are excellent on liver and shad off points, and down rigging silver and gold spoons near the jetty and dam. Redfish are excellent on perch, shad, and silver spoons, and down rigging spoons near the jetty and dam. Channel catfish are excellent on liver, shrimp, cut bait, and cheesebait near the dam. Blue catfish are fair on cut bait.

CALAVERAS: Water stained; 88 degrees. Black bass are good on dark soft plastic worms, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits over reed beds and near the dam. Striped bass are good on spoons and striper jigs near the dam and the crappie wall in 15-20 feet, and on chicken livers and shad along the shoreline. Redfish are excellent down rigging silver and gold spoons and live bait along the crappie wall and the dam in 1020 feet, on crawfish and tilapia along the shoreline, and on live bait along the crappie wall. Crappie are slow. Channel and blue catfish are excellent on liver, cheesebait, shrimp, and shad near the railroad trestle and 181 Cove. Yellow catfish are slow.

CHOKE CANYON: Water clear; 89 degrees; 9.27' low. Black bass are fair on spinnerbaits and large soft plastics early and late, and on crankbaits and Carolina rigged soft plastics in the grass. White bass are slow. Crappie are slow. Drum are fair on nightcrawlers. Channel and blue catfish are good on punchbait. Yellow catfish are good on live perch.

COLETO CREEK: Water stained; 88 degrees (96 degrees at discharge); 3.81' low. Black bass are slow. Striped bass are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are slow. Channel and blue catfish are slow. Yellow catfish are slow.

FALCON: Water stained; 84 degrees. Black bass are good flipping soft plastic worms and crankbaits in 2 8 feet. Striped bass are slow. Channel and blue catfish are excellent on stinkbait. Everyone in the boat must have a Mexico fishing license (if fishing the Mexico side) whether fishing or not.

COASTAL

NORTH SABINE: Trout are fair to good under birds and pods of shad on soft plastics. Redfish are good under rafts of shad on topwaters. Redfish are good in the marsh on small topwaters.

SOUTH SABINE: Trout are fair to good under birds and pods of shad. Trout are good at the jetty on live bait and topwaters. Trout are good in the surf on topwaters and shad.

BOLIVAR: Trout are good on the outgoing tide at Rollover Pass on red or white MirrOlures and soft plastics. Redfish have been taken in the marsh with higher tides.

TRINITY BAY: Trout are good for drifters working pods of shad and mullet on Bass Assassins, Trout Killers and Sand Eels. Trout and redfish have been caught under birds on the upper end of the bay. Trout, redfish and flounder are good at the spillway on live bait.

EAST GALVESTON BAY: Trout are good for drifters working deep shell on limetreuse and plum plastics. Trout are good on the south shoreline on Catch 5s, MirrOlures and Catch 2000s. Trout are fair to good on the shell adjacent to the channel on live bait.

WEST GALVESTON BAY: Sheepshead, redfish and black drum are good at the jetty on shrimp and crabs. Trout are good in the surf on live bait and topwaters. Offshore is good for kingfish, ling and dolphin. Tarpon have been cruising the beachfront.

TEXAS CITY: Trout are fair to good on the reefs and in the channel on live shrimp and croakers. Redfish and sand trout are fair to good in Moses Lake on shrimp.

FREEPORT: Trout are good at San Luis Pass on shrimp, MirrOlures and soft plastics. The surf has held trout on live bait and artificial. Trout, redfish, sand trout and sheepshead are good on live shrimp on the reefs in Christmas Bay and Bastrop Bay.

EAST MATAGORDA BAY: Trout are fair for drifters on live shrimp over mid-bay reefs. Waders have taken good catches on reefs on topwaters and plastics. Shorelines have been holding trout and redfish with swelling tides.

WEST MATAGORDA BAY: Trout are fair on sand and grass humps on soft plastics and topwaters. Redfish and black drum are fair on live shrimp in Oyster Lake and around Shell Island. Trout are good in the surf on live bait.

PORT O'CONNOR: Trout and redfish are fair to good on topwaters and live bait over sand, grass and shell in San Antonio Bay. Trout and redfish are fair for drifters working the back lakes with live shrimp. Trout are good in the surf and at the jetty.

ROCKPORT: Trout are fair in the guts and channels on free-lined shrimp. Trout are fair over grass while drifting with live shrimp. Redfish are good on piggy perch and shrimp around Mud Island.

PORT ARANSAS: Trout, redfish and sheepshead are fair to good at the jetty on shrimp and croakers. Trout are good in the surf on topwaters and croakers. Offshore is good for dolphin, ling, kingfish and tuna.

CORPUS CHRISTI: Trout are fair to good on the edge of the spoils on piggy perch, Gulps and live shrimp. Redfish are good in the potholes on shrimp. Trout are good in the surf on croakers.

BAFFIN BAY: Trout are good on topwaters and soft plastics around deep rocks and grass. Redfish are fair to good for sight-casters on the flats on small topwaters.

PORT MANSFIELD: Trout are good on topwaters on the edge of the channel and around sand and grass along spoils. Redfish are fair to good while drifting pot holes. Offshore is good for kingfish, dolphin, ling and tuna.

SOUTH PADRE: Trout are good over sand and grass in South Bay. Tarpon are showing at the pass. Redfish are best on the flats on gold spoons and small Super Spooks and SkitterWalks.

PORT ISABEL: Trout and redfish are fair to good on the flats on live shrimp and DOA Shrimp under a popping cork. Trout are good on the deeper edges and flats in Laguna Vista and Airport Cove on topwaters and live shrimp. Redfish are fair to good in Cullen Bay on topwaters.
