Football season is back at San Marcos Academy.
Yet, Friday night’s game was a ugly battle between the Bears and Medina.
SMA looked sharp and the team was excited as they entered the field set on a mission to make the TAPPS playoffs in 2009. But reality set in as the teams played to a scoreless tie in the first quarter, while several bad pitches and bad defense overshadowed the game, which the Bears were able to pull out, 31-28.
The Bears’ Anthony Richardson pitched an option wide and gave the ball to the Bobcats inside their own 10-yard line with 11:46 remaining in the half. Armando Rodriguez dove up the middle from the 2-yard line to take an early 6-0 lead on the next play to give the Bobcats an early advantage.
The Bears would answer with a Richardson 2-yard run of his own up the middle and Trey Banks added the extra point.
Medina was driving deep, but an interception by Cameron Whitehead would save the SMA lead going into the halftime.
The Bobcats had 31 yards of offense at halftime compared to the Bears 57. Medina had 60 penalty yards to 31 for the Bears.
Medina owned the third quarter, as it held the ball for nearly eight minutes until Rodriguez walked into the end zone untouched for a 10-yard touchdown. A two-point conversion gave the Bobcats a 14-7 lead over the Bears.
Richardson took a broken play four yards to pay dirt and Banks would add the PAT to tie the game up at 14.
The senior quarterback added an 88-yard punt return and a 30-yard run to help the Bears notch a win for their home opener.
“Congratulations to our team but this was a ugly win, we have things to work on now,” SMA head coach Brian Gaylor said. “We need to get ready for Brooks Academy, we just kept letting them get off the hook.”
The Bears host Brooks Academy Thursday night.
