HS Football: Texans trample Luling

By Joseph O. Garcia

In season full of high expectations, the Wimberley Texans did not disappoint in their season opener. The Texans looked impressive as they beat the Luling Eagles 53-20 at Texan Stadium.

Wimberley’s high-powered offense dominated an exciting game full of quick scores and hard hits.

The scoring got stated at the 6:43 mark in the first quarter when the Texans’ standout sophomore Dennis Smith barreled in the end zone for a two-yard touchdown.

Luling answered right back scoring a touchdown of their own with 4:57 left in the first quarter to even the score at 7.

The Texan defense added to the total when Colby Fonville, Jr., forced a safety on Eagle quarterback Braxton Allen. Wimberley added another touchdown and a field goal to take a 26-7 halftime lead.

It was more of the same from the Wimberley offense in the second half. The Luling defense could not contain the Texans passing attack as quarterback Brooks Blakemore finished with 229 passing yards and four touchdowns.

After a snap sailed over the Luling kickers head, Smith would add another two-yard touchdown to make the score 32-7.

The Eagles then made an attempt at an onside kick in which Texan defensive back Clifford Hunter promptly returned for a touchdown.

Sixteen seconds later, the Eagles’ Jerod Nash returned a 70-yard kickoff himself to bring the score to 39-20. This would complete Luling’s scoring on the night.

The Texans added two more late touchdowns to bring the final score to 53-20.

The Blakemore-to-Blakemore connection stood out as Brennen Blakemore led the team with seven catches for 164 yards and four touchdowns through the air.

“I thought we did some things real well,” WHS head coach Weldon Nelms said. “Overall I thought our kids came out ready to play.”

Luling drops to 0-1 and looks to improve next week at Blanco.

The Texans are 1-0 and are back in action at 7:30 Friday Sept. 4 in Drippings Springs.
