High School Football: Bears score blowout win
Yes, you can call it a win streak.
The San Marcos Academy Bears improved to 2-0 on the season after a 64-0 win over Brooks Academy Thursday night.
Brooks was a team that failed to win a game or score a point last season, but the Bears entered the game not taking their opponent lightly and cruised to the win.
SMA’s Michael Latham grabbed the first score for SMA when he raced for a 48-yard touchdown and Trey Banks added the PAT for a 7-0 lead with 10:59 left in the opening quarter.
A bad punt snap by the Bengals gave the Bears the ball at the 13-yard line, and Latham once again ran it in for a 10-yard touchdown. The kick was good, and the rout was on.
Anthony Richardson hit a wide-open Mark Hamm for a 40-yard pass for another score, extending the lead to 21-0. Lineman William Henke fell on an end zone fumble for another quick score and the Bears’ lead grew to 28-0 to end the first quarter.
The Bears would strike pay dirt again as Michael Young rambled 30 yards for another score. Chris Roberts then fell on a fumble that set up Richardson’s 22-yard scoring pass to Hamm. The Bears continued to extend their lead, up 42-0 with just under 10 minutes until halftime.
The Bengals found some momentum, but got stacked up by Cody Watson on a fourth down play with an 8-yard sack.
That set up Young’s second score of the game, a 14-yard jaunt, giving the Bears a 49-0 lead at the half.
Latham opened the second half with a 72-yard touchdown run, as Ty Merriweather’s 22-yard touchdown run capped the Bears’ scoring.
“We played a good game and our passing game looked great,” SMA head coach Brian Gaylor said. “Our blocks up front looked good versus Brooks.”
The Bears (2-0) are back in action next Friday with a 7:30 p.m. home game against Runge.
The Bears improve to 2-0 on the season, the Bengals fall to 0-1. The Bears return to action on September 11th versus the Runge Yellowjackets from the UIL.
