High School Football: Roughshod Lobos blow out Austin-Reagan
Kyle — In its second home game of the season, Lehman was once again victorious. The Lobos looked steady on both sides of the ball as they defeated Austin-Reagan 41-6 at Bob Shelton Stadium.
The Lobos racked up 228 first-half yards and held the Raiders to 95. Lehman was led by John Martell, who made big plays on both sides of that ball as well as special teams.
Martell rushed 10 times for 87 yards and a touchdown in the first half and picked off Reagan quarterback JaQuarius Daniels.
“I saw that the receiver overran the ball, so I just came in and scooped it,” Martell said.
Martell’s touchdown came on a 2-yard run at the 6:46 mark in the first quarter. On the point-after attempt, kicker Hector Rodriguez was injured and would not return forcing Lehman to go for 2-point conversions on four of its next five touchdowns.
The beginning of the second half was a different story for the Lobos.
Reagan was forced to punt of its first possession of the first half. On the run-back attempt the ball hit a Lobo player and was recovered by the Raiders at the Lehman 45-yard line.
A 41-yard reception by wide receiver Terran Williams put the Raiders in scoring position. On the play, Lehman was penalized for a late hit and unsportsmanlike conduct.
Daniels then lined up as a receiver and drew a holding penalty in the end zone on the Lobo defense. He later punched it in for 1-yard touchdown run.
“We ended up touching the ball and they recovered letting them back in the ball game,” LHS head coach Steve Davis said. “We can’t do that against good teams. We have to eliminate penalties and other mistakes.”
The Lobos would get back on track after a 69-yard touchdown pass that was tipped by a Reagan defender and into the waiting hands of sophomore receiver Jaylon Hardaway to make the score 21-6.
“Our offense came back and answered and we got the momentum back.” Davis said.
One minute and one second later, the offense struck again. This time back-up quarterback Michael Aldridge scampered into the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown run. LHS finished the game with 362 yards on the ground and 131 through the air.
Lehman’s defense put pressure on Daniels all night and held the Raiders to just 164 yards of total offense.
“Our defense played a hell of a game and kept us in it,” Davis said. “That one score that they got, special teams kind of let that happen.”
Lehman added two more touchdowns by Jacob Torres on a 30-yard run and Ryan Wagner on a 4-yard run.
LHS will be back on the field Sept. 11 against San Antonio Edison in San Antonio.
