San Marcos — From Staff Reports
All the pageantry of homecoming was in place and all fans wondered whether the undefeated Bears could answer the bell against the 10th-ranked Shiner-St. Paul Cardinals.
San Marcos Academy struggled, as turnovers and an overall lack of defense led to a 34-31 loss in front of a disappointed, standing room only crowd at Ingram Stadium.
The Bears got on the scoreboard first Michael Latham broke free through St. Paul’s defense for a 50-yard touchdown run. Latham’s score was set up by Ramiro Cruz’ fumble recovery.
After a failed onside kick, the Cardinals got on the board with a 1-yard touchdown run by Adam Hollenbach.
SMA answered on the next drive in big fashion, as Mark Hamm returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards to the end zone. Trey Banks knocked through the point after, spotting the Bears a 14-6 lead with five minutes left in the first quarter.
St. Paul answered SMA again with a score of its own, as quarterback Devin Pesek bounded into the end zone from 16 yards out. The two-point conversion failed and the Bears led 14-12.
After Banks drilled a 32-yard field goal, the Cardinals answered with a touchdown and a two-point conversion to lead 20-17.
Yet, Anthony Richardson wouldn’t let SMA go into halftime without the lead as he broke 44 yards around end to pay dirt.
St. Paul scored on its first drive of the second half to go up 27-24. The Bears were unable to answer the score, as their offense stalled.
SMA fumbled twice on ensuing drives and the Cardinals took advantage, scoring on a 1-yard run to go up 34-24.
The Bears scored late in the fourth quarter, but it proved to be too little, too late.
“The Cardinals executed well,” SMA head coach Brian Gaylor said. “We needed to make big stops but we didn’t have it tonight.”
SMA falls to 4-1 on the season and returns to action Friday night at San Antonio Christian. It will be the Bears’ first district game.
