In a battle most would consider David versus Goliath, the 4-2 San Marcos Academy Bears hit the road for their longest trip of the year (105 miles) to play the 5-1 Flyers of Victoria St. Joseph.
The Flyers are currently ranked No. 17 in the latest Huddleuptexas.com poll and are 35-point favorites over the Bears.
After SMA dropped its last two games by a total of seven points to Shiner St. Paul and San Antonio Christian, the team must now turn their focus to the toughest opponent on their schedule and have their slingshot loaded in Victoria.
The Flyers’ only loss was a 21-0 defeat to the Refugio Bobcats in week zero. Victoria St. Joseph has several Football Championship Series recruits along the front offensive line and a balanced running and passing attack.
The Flyers opened district play last week with a 35-14 thumping of the Giddings State Indians at home.
Kevin Daniels leads the Victoria passing attack, as the Flyers rolled up 430 yards offense earlier in the year versus a very talented Houston Second Baptist team. Kamen Ruelas leads the rushing attack averaging well over 100 yards per game this season.
The Bears must find a way to avenge last season’s 57-0 beat down by the Flyers. SMA is still going through the rebuilding process and the team has definitely shown progress to this point of the season.
The Bears’ offense only produced 117 yards of offense and five first downs versus the Lions of San Antonio Christian. SMA’s Slot-T must get back on track to have a chance versus the Flyers.
The SMA offensive line had problems versus the Lions last week and might again this week as they will be outsized in Victoria.
Defense has been one of the highlights over the last few weeks, as the Bears they have given themselves a chance to win even if the offense didn’t.
However, the offense must get back to basics and cut down on penalties and miscues to have any chance versus the talented Flyers.
SMA continues to be led offensively by Anthony Richardson with 612 yards on 58 carries.
The Bear defense is headed by Michael Young with 40 tackles, Mark Hamm with 36 and Cameron Whitehead tied with Romero Cruz with 34 for the season.
“St. Joeseph is a top 10 team, they have almost as many kids in football as we have in our school,” SMA head coach Brian Gaylor said. “We are looking for a great effort from our kids.”
• Did you know: Winston Ruelas, a St. Joseph Flyers graduate, is in his junior season at Texas State. Ruelas is the son of St. Joseph offensive coordinator Romeo Ruelas and the brother of Flyers’ running back Kamen Ruelas.
