San Marcos — Crosstown rivals met up Tuesday night at Goodnight Junior High, as the Goodnight and Miller Junior High 7th grade teams battled on the gridiron.
The Rattlers came away with two wins, as they bested the Diamondbacks 36-6 and 7-0.
Goodnight’s “A” team chose to keep the ball on the ground in its win against Miller. The Rattlers rumbled for five touchdowns, two by Manuel Salazar.
Elton Gil added two touchdowns and ensuing two-point conversions, while Jake Champion capped the scoring with a touchdown of his own.
Goodnight’s offensive line (Jake McGee, Jose Mireless, Taylor Till and Christian McLean) paved the way for the running backs. McGee laid some crushing blocks to spring Salazar and Gil.
The Rattlers’ defense was led by James Junek, as he had some bone-rattling hits on Diamondback ball carriers.
Miller’s lone touchdown was scored by Jacob Mendoza.
Goodnight’s “A” team ends the season with a record of 4-2-1.
“B” teams show their “D”
The 7th grade “B” teams were locked up in a defensive struggle Tuesday night.
Both defenses shut the opposing offenses down until late in the fourth quarter. Actually, only 15 seconds were left on the clock when Goodnight tallied the only score of the game.
The Rattlers faced a fourth-and-3 from the 25-yard line and converted it when Carlos Villasona connected with Chris Gonzales deep in the end zone.
Goodnight’s “B” team had only allowed six points in 2009 and finished the season undefeated (7-0).
