Buda — No football game between Hays and Lehman will mean more than tonight.

When the Rebels meet the Lobos at Shelton Stadium, playoffs and bragging rights are on the line. It’s finally the time to see if Lehman is man enough to hang at the adults’ table.

If the Lobos beat Hays, not only will it be the first time in school history on the gridiron, it will also propel them into the playoffs. Lehman had its chances to make the playoffs recently, but whittled away the opportunity.

It won’t be an easy task for the Lobos, as the Rebels are playing solid football right now.

While Hays fell to Del Valle last week, the Rebels are still a team to be feared in District 17-4A. Hays has averaged 39 points per game in its district games so far.

Lehman needs to get more consistent play at quarterback — and there’s no better time for the best game of the season. Harvest Trammell and Matthew Aquiano didn’t look like varsity starters during the Lobos’ 21-7 loss to Lockhart last week.

If Lehman wants to beat the Rebels, the Lobos need to limit their penalties and turnovers. Hays, on the other hand, just needs to keep doing what it has been doing.

Texans wrap up regular season

WIMBERLEY — When the season began, pollsters and pundits loved the Wimberley Texans.

Even though Wimberley was young and didn’t finish its 2008 campaign with conviction, the voters for the Associated Press picked them as one of the Top 10 teams in Class 3A.

The Texans’ season started rough, but they’ve turned it around in District 8-3A play. Wimberley actually has a chance to win a district championship tonight against Fredericksburg.

If the Texans win tonight, they’ll earn their first district championship since 2007.

Wimberley must get by a tough Fredericksburg team though. The Billies are 3-6, but all three of their wins have come in district games.

Fredericksburg is led by quarterback Dylan Reeh (606 passing yards and five touchdowns) and running back J.C. Hickman (756 yards and seven touchdowns). Reeh has also scored four rushing touchdowns in 2009.

The Texans rebounded from a close loss at the hands of Liberty Hill by beating up on Llano, so their confidence is back up to where it needs to be.

And that’s at a championship level.
