High School Basketball: San Marcos girls fall short in opener

San Marcos — The San Marcos Lady Rattlers knew they were going to have their hands full Tuesday night in the team’s season opener against Class 5A Austin High at the Snake Pit.

After all, it was game against a bigger school, and it was the Lady Rattlers’ first game under new head coach David Norris. While the Lady Rattlers put up a bit of a fight throughout the game, Austin High’s speed and experience proved to be too much, as SMHS suffered a 67-44 loss.

“Considering that’s a really good program from a Class 5A school, I was pretty pleased with what I saw tonight,” Norris said. “Of course we had a number of mistakes and turnovers, but those are things that you can kind of expect the first game of the season.”

Austin High jumped out to a 17-9 lead in the first quarter and never trailed. The Lady Maroons led 35-27 going into the half.

San Marcos had benefited from the strong inside play of forward Domonique Miles and Victoria Gonzales in the first half, both scoring eight points in the first half. Miles wound up leading the Lady Rattlers with 10 points.

While the Lady Rattlers were stronger inside, SMHS struggled getting back on transition, allowing Austin High to score numerous fast-break points.

San Marcos was down by nine points entering the final frame and trimmed the Lady Maroons’ lead to five with a 3-pointer from the top of the key from Madelyn Swinney. That cut Austin High’s lead to 52-37 with 6:47 left in the game.

But more Lady Rattler turnovers and the inability to convert at the free-throw line allowed Austin High to pull away in the final moments.

San Marcos (0-1) is back in action Friday night with a 5:30 p.m. game at Wimberley.

In sub-varsity action, the Lady Rattler junior varsity team suffered a 26-16 loss.
