High School Basketball: Late surge lifts Seguin past San Marcos girls

The San Marcos Lady Rattlers enjoyed a good start in Tuesday night’s road game at Seguin, but the team’s lack of height, combined with a strong fourth quarter from Seguin’s standout post Monnarae Martin, hindered the SMHS girls in a 49-37 loss.

SMHS came out strong and led by six after the first half, thanks in part to a transition offense led by senior Ashley Crayton. SMHS held a 12-6 lead going into the second quarter, and held a five-point going into halftime.

But Seguin started to heat up in the second half. The Lady Matadors trimmed San Marcos’ lead to one point in the third quarter, as Martin and teammate Leelee Logan started to come on strong.

Martin scored from inside and out, while Logan nailed shots from the outside to give the Lady Matadors the lead and the eventual win. Seguin hit a total of four 3-pointers in the final quarter.

Seguin had an obvious height-advantage with Martin, but it didn’t help the Lady Rattlers that 5-11 post Rosalind McKinney was sidelined from the game as she is still nursing a sore knee.

It was the Lady Rattlers’ (1-2) first road loss of the season, as the team was coming off a lopsided win at Wimberley last weekend

San Marcos is back in action this weekend as the team opens play in the Marble Falls Invitational Friday morning.

SMA boys win tourney

SAN ANTONIO — The San Marcos Academy boys basketball team is enjoying a good start to the 2009-10 season, as the Bears claimed the San Antonio-Lutheran title last weekend.

The team started the tournament with a 43-34 win over Winston Friday, as John Nealon and Jackie Chen each scored 12 points.

On Saturday SMA won claimed a 60-29 win over Rainbow Hills, as Mark Hamm led the team with 28 and Jay Claibourne added 19.

That placed SMA in the title game, where the Bears cruised to a 70-58 win over Keystone. Once again it was Hamm, who was named tournament MVP, leading the way with 28 points. Claibourne tossed in 27 points in the championship game and was named first-team all-tournament.

SMA head basketball coach Kelia Price said the team played well considering that most of the roster on Saturday had played in a football playoff game the night before.

SMA is now 6-1 on the season and are back in action Thursday night with a 6:30 p.m. game against Temple Holy Trinity.

Hays girls now 3-0

BUDA — It wasn’t easy, but the Hays Lady Rebels found a way to remain undefeated in the young basketball season with a 42-44 win over Austin-Akins Tuesday night at Oran Bales Gymnasium.

Hays found itself trailing by six points at the half, but Lady Rebels put momentum on their side thanks to a 16-2 run in the third quarter to take an eight-point lead.

Senior post Brooke Borreson led Lady Rebels with 12 points, while Jaleasa Jone and Ashley Rankine threw in seven points each.

Rebels suffer 90-50 loss

MARBLE FALLS — The Hays Rebels had a rought night in their season opener Tuesday, enduring a 90-50 loss at Marble Falls.

Hays fell behind 22-9 after the first quarter and was never able to get close. Kimbro and Alvarado led the Rebels with 10 points each.

Lobos drop opener

KYLE — Lehman found out just how tough it is to have a young team in high school basketball Tuesday night.

The Lobos hosted Austin Travis and took a beating. Lehman only scored 19 points in the first half and lost 80-37.

After trailing 38-17 at the end of the first half, the Rebels poured it on in the second, extending their lead to 55-26.

Travis scored 25 in the fourth quarter to tock in the final score.

Jonathan Garrion led Lehman with 13 points.

SMA girls fall

The San Marcos Academy girls took a tough loss to Johnson City Tuesday night, falling 37-28.

The Lady Bears only scored 13 points in the first half, but still led by a point.

SMA went cold after halftime and only scored 15 points, while Johnson City poured in 25.

SMA falls to 0-2 on the year.

Wimberley girls thump SA Randolph

WIMBERLEY — Even though their team is ravaged by the state volleyball tournament, Wimberley jumped all over San Antonio Randolph Tuesday night.

The Lady Texans stormed out to a 16-point halftime lead and won by 27. Wimberley’s defense was solid, as the Lady Texans won 59-26.

SA Randolph’s offense could hardly get going due to the Lady Texans’ pressure. The Lady Eagles never scored more than nine points in a quarter.
