HS Basketball: Rattlers fall at home

San Marcos — San Marcos only had two players with substantial varsity playing experience coming into the 2009-10 season.

The Rattlers graduated a large portion of their roster last season which forced head coach Rob Shivers to pull up 12 players from sub-varsity teams. Shivers said this is the youngest team he’s ever coached at San Marcos.

Since the team is young, there will be certain nights (like Friday night) that serve as nothing but a learning experience. The Rattlers learned they need to keep their hands to themselves and offense can't be forced in a 67-43 loss to Cibolo-Steele.

“It’s going to be a process,” Shivers said. “This was a great game for us to learn how to play against an athletic and experienced team like Steele.”

San Marcos kept pace with the Knights until foul trouble knocked the host out of contention.

The Rattlers only trailed Steele by three points at halftime, but put the Knights in the bonus with 4:12 left in the third quarter. San Marcos continued to foul and Steele knocked down its free throws.

“We fouled way too much to try to keep it close,” Shivers said. “We couldn’t get out of our own way.”

The Rattlers committed 34 fouls in the game and put the Knights to the line 50 times. Steele made 34 free throws.

San Marcos, on the other hand, took 10 free throws and made two.

The Rattlers also couldn’t make a basket to save their lives. San Marcos shot 16 for 51 from the field and only knocked down four 3-pointers.

“Offensively, we never attacked what they were doing very well,” Shivers said. “They ran a point zone and whenever we pushed the ball, they were closing out on our jump shooters. We shot some bad shots too.”

The Rattlers now must regroup and travel to Smithson Valley Tuesday night in search of their second win.
