High School Hoops: SM girls smack Crockett

San Marcos — When David Norris took over as head coach of the San Marcos girl’s basketball team, he knew what type of system he desired to run.

Norris wanted the Lady Rattlers to be an athletic bunch, running up and down the court on both offense and defense. San Marcos would use turnovers and quick transition baskets to propel itself in 2009-10.

The Lady Rattlers used their athletic ability to their advantage Monday night, as they wore down Austin Crockett and won 60-48.

“We used a full-court man-to-man defense that wore them down in the third and fourth quarter,” Norris said. “They ran out of gas and we continued to make them run the floor.”

San Marcos trailed 32-25 at halftime, but stormed ahead in the second.

The Lady Rattlers held the Lady Cougars to 16 points in the second half and scored 35 of their own. San Marcos blitzed Crockett with a 21-point fourth quarter.

Ali Gonzales led the Lady Rattlers with 17 points, while Ashley Crayton added 12. Dani Doria went in for Madelyn Swinney in the fourth quarter and scored 10 points.

San Marcos hosts Austin-Anderson tonight at 7:30 p.m.

In sub-varsity action — Both the junior varsity and freshman teams beat Crockett easily.

The junior varsity sprinted out to an early lead and didn’t take their foot off the gas, winning 51-22. Michelle Moody led San Marcos with 14 points.

The freshmen held the Lady Cougars to 19 points and won 45-19. Brianna Brown scored 14 points, while Adolynn Newton added eight.
