Victoria — VICTORIA — San Marcos Baptist Academy head coach Kelia Price and his team knew a win over Victoria St. Joseph would put the team in a good position to stay on task to grab a spot in the TAPPS playoffs.
The Bears took a 48-41 win over a packed house at Flyers Gymnasium behind the defensive play of John Nealon and the shooting of Mark Hamm.
Hamm dominated in the first half, as he scored 14 points.
The Bears led 22-16 at halftime.
Hamm continued to put up big points but it was the defense of Anthony Richardson and Nealon that was the game’s biggest storyline.
SMA became more conservative down the stretch but Nealon would have three steals in the final period and five for the game to preserve the 48-41 win for the Bears.
SMA was led with 26 points by Hamm and 10 for Richardson.
“This was a hard fought win for us in a hostile environment and this was a good game for the Bears,” Price said.
The Bears move to 12-4 on the season and 3-3 in district play.
Defending champs stuff SMA girls
San Marcos Baptist Academy head coach Toby Wade knew his team would have their hands full versus the defending state champs and he was right as the Lady Flyers flew past the Bears 53-10 on the road.
Victoria St. Joseph jumped out to a 14-0 lead and led 28-4 at the half.
Brooke Blanton led all scorers with 12 points for the Lady Flyers.
The Lady Bears and they fell 53-10 going 4-10 and 0-2 in district play.
