HS Football: SMA wins home opener

San Marcos — The overflow crowd at Ingram/A+FCU Stadium witnessed the Bears of San Marcos Academy dominate the Bengals of San Antonio Brooks by a score of 21-0 Friday night.

The Bears dominated every aspect of the game, thanks to a strong defense supported by Cameron Whitehead, Sabas Castillo and Estevan Gutierrez.

After watching turnovers hurt his team in last week’s season-opening loss at Medina, particularly in the first half, SMA head coach Les Davis didn’t want to see another poor start. He got what he wished for, as the Bears never trailed in the game.

The Bears first score came from running back Ty Merriweather, who took a pitch from quarterback Jonathan Powell and broke free for a 24-yard touchdown.

Memo Borrego booted the extra point to give SMA a 7-0 lead.

Minutes later, Borrego booted a deep, 45-yard punt that kept the Bengals pinned deep in their own territory for most of the first quarter.

The Bears struck again in the second quarter, driving the ball 57 yards, capped by another touchdown from Merriweather. Borrego added the kick to give SMA a 14-0 lead at  intermission.

SMA upped its lead to 21-0 when Powell scrambled free for a 35-yard touchdown run with 2:40. Another Borrego kick gave the Bears a 21-0 lead.

The Bears and Bengals both rushed the ball 29 times each however, it would be the Bears that rolled up 178 yards to only 69 for the Bengals.  The Bengals passed for 5-8 for 63 yards compared to 4-11 for only 28 yards for the home team. SMA receivers struggled all night catching the slick ball on a wet field.

“We executed the plays better as a team, the defense made big plays we put pressure on them the entire night,” SMA wide receiver Alex Ashley said.

Davis said he was pleased to see his team get its first win of the season, but realizes the Bears still have plenty of room for improvement.

“We are still learning to play the game the right way,” Davis said. “Offensively, when we executed we played good, but we made too many silly penalties. Defensively, we need to tackle better.”

The Bears (1-1) return to action Friday on the road versus Austin St. Austin Dominic. The Bears return home on Sept. 17 versus the Rangers from Texas School of the Deaf.
