HS Football: Lehman scores win at Edison

SAN ANTONIO — The Lehman Lobos were able to score their first victory of the young season Friday night at San Antonio-Edison, but it wasn’t easy.

Lehman held a 21-7 lead over the Bears midway through the third quarter, only to see Edison climb back and tie the game with a pair of touchdowns in less than a four-minute span.

Fortunately for the Lobos, Jaylon Hardaway was able to score on a 20-yard run with 5:25 left in the game to give Lehman a 28-21 win at the Burbank Athletic Complex in San Antonio.

Lehman (1-1) jumped out to a 6-0 lead when quarterback Matthew Anguiano hooked up with Peter Gutierrez for a 17-yard score, as the pair connected again moments later for a 32-yard scoring strike to help put LHS up 14-0.

Seth Henry put Edison (1-1) on the board in the second quarter with a 3-yard run, trimming the Lobos’ lead to 14-7 at the half.

Charles Williams put the Lobos up by 14 points with his 33-yard touchdown run with 5:45 left in the third quarter, but Edison was able to knot the score with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Sergio Neaves to Joe Alvarez and an 8-yard touchdown run from Henry. Osvaldo Guerrero’s kick tied the score at 21-all with 40 seconds left in the third quarter.

Six minutes later, Hardaway came through with the game-winning run.

Key to the Lobos’ win was the team’s ability to cut down on turnovers. Lehman turned the ball over six times in the team’s season-opening loss to St. Michaels and had just two turnovers against Edison.

Lehman also did a sound job moving the ball on the ground, rushing 35 times for 234 yards, as Harvest Trammell, who shared time at quarterback with Anguiano, led the team with 71 yards on 13 carries, while Charles Williams rushed for 63 yards on eight attempts.

Gutierrez was Lehman’s top receiver with three catches for 57 yards and two touchdowns.

The Lobos are back in action Thursday when the team visits Austin-Crockett for a 7 p.m. game at Burger Stadium.
