High School Volleyball: SMHS takes on the road

The San Marcos Rattlers won’t sulk too long about falling short in their own Ragin’ Rattler Classic last weekend. Their schedule won’t allow it.

San Marcos is back in action tonight with a 6:30 p.m. road match at Pflugerville-Hendrickson.

The Lady Rattlers won five consecutive matches in last weekend’ tournament, going 3-0 in pool play before claiming wins over Pflugerville-Connally and Columbus to advance to the tournament championship game against Dallas-Northwest.

Despite putting forth a hard-fought effort, the Lady Rattlers came up short, falling 25-21, 25-20 against Northwest. San Marcos upped its record to 14-9 after the weekend tournament.

“I was extremely proud of the way we played last weekend,” SMHS head volleyball coach Michelle Moreno said. “We did a good job of playing aggressive and together as a team. It’s too bad we lost in the title game, but we will learn from it and continue to improve.”

Maggie Breed led the Rattler attack with five kills while Jordan Carswell came through with five kills in the championship game. Ally Bryant came through with three service aces, while Lizzie Brown led the back-court defense with seven digs.

The Lady Rattlers face another strong challenge tonight against a The Lady Hawks are team that is 8-8 on the season with some solid wins on their resumé. Brittany Gray is the team’s leading attacker with 102 kills, and also is tops at the service line with 23 aces.

Zoey Hanrahan and Blaine Koester lead Hendrickson with 10 blocks each up front, while Brooke Bishop is the team’s top back-court defender with

Carswell currently leads the Lady Rattler offense, averaging 3.2 kills per game with 136 on the season.

Defensively, Birdie Schneider and Delaney Hearne are protecting the back and front court well, as Schneider leads the team with 188 digs, while Hearne leads SMHS with 25 blocked shots.

Carswell also currently leads the team from the service line with 75 aces this season, as the Lady Rattlers have done a much better job serving since struggling in the area at the beginning of the season.

Carswell and Ali Gonzales have shared time at setter, with Carswell leading the squad with 225 assists, followed by 199 from Gonzales.

Following tonight’s game, the Lady Rattlers are back in the friendly confines of The Snake Pit Friday night with a 6 p.m. home match against Del Valle.



WHS hosts Burnet

The Wimberley Lady Texans will try to continue their winning ways against former district foe Burnet with a 7:30 p.m. match tonight at the WHS Gymnasium.

The Texans won eight straight games over the weekend to win the Hays Lady Rebel Bash and remain ranked No. 2 in Class 3A with a 20-2 record.

The Lady Texans scored wins over Vandergrift, McCalum, Akins and Fredericksburg in pool play before beating Hays, El Paso-Riverside and Poth to advance to the finals. There, WHS knocked off Class 5A Georgetown in three sets, 25-23, 25-14, 25-19.



In other action, Lehman’s Lady Lobos will try to keep their home win streak intact tonight with a 6 p.m. match against Austin-Crockett, while San Marcos Academy enters district play tonight with a 6 p.m. match against Regents.
