San Marcos —
It’s tough to win football games when you lose the battle of turnovers. A lesson the San Marcos Academy Bears learned the hard way in last week’s season-opening Medina as SMA turned the ball over on its first three possessions en route to a 27-20 loss.
All three turnovers gave Medina great field position and the Bears couldn’t seem to recover.
And while quarterback Jonathan Powell tried to lead his team back with three touchdowns in the second half and came very close evening the score as time ticked off.
Cutting down on turnovers and penalties are always a part of high school football in week zero, but if the Bears play up to their potential like they did in the second half at Medina, it could be an entirely different story tonight when the Bears host Brooks Academy for a 7:30 p.m. game.
“After seeing how the team molded together after the first half of the Medina game to nearly pull out a come from behind W, I am really excited to see how we do against Brooks as a team,” Powell said.
Offense sputtered at times for SMA, but the offensive and defensive line will need to step up to protect the quarterbacks and apply more pressure on the opposition to be successful against the Bengals.
Aubrey Oswalt passed 4-8 for 61 yards with one interception and Josh McIntyre had a great night receiving. He also had a 102-yard kickoff return that was negated on a clipping penalty.
The Bears’ kicking game, led by Memo Borrego, was strong versus Medina despite missing one PAT.
Brooks returns 10 starters on defense and eight on defense and are led by quarterback Giovanni Galata and linebacker Alex Zavala.
Galata passed for four touchdowns in 2009, but William Blohm also saw time at quarterback passing 6-20 for 93 yards last week.
The Bengals opened their season with a 54-14 loss at Runge last week.
Powell will lead the offense for the Bears after leading the back the Bears from a 27-0 deficit, as his scrambling ability helped the Bears claw back in the second half on the road.
The Bears’ rushing attack, led by Ty Merriweather, showed glimpses of power and speed against Medina and will be counted on tonight to take the pressure off SMA’s quarterbacking duo.
“I hope that our second-half team shows up at the beginning of the game this week,” SMA head coach Les Davis said. “I know we grew as a football team last week. Our main goal for this game is to eliminate the mistakes and learn to play with confidence as a team.”
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at A+FCU/Ingram Stadium on the San Marcos Academy campus.
