He’s an enigma.

Especially for those people who aren’t members of the Texas State football team’s inner circle. The star quarterback who doesn’t seek the spotlight. The first person to take the blame when the Bobcats lose. He won’t claim any credit when they win, though. He’s guarded in front of the media, but comfortable around his teammates. The Stephenville product who once told his head coach that he was ready to take over the starting job at Texas State as a true freshman on a sideline in Lubbock.

“I’d say we’re about a week away from being game ready,” junior safety Damani Alexcee said with a smile after last Friday afternoon’s practice inside Bobcat Stadium. “That’s just how it is. You have to trust that we’re where we are supposed to be.”

Continuity hasn’t been used to describe the Arkansas State football program lately.

Instead, the Red Wolves were forced to play a game of musical chairs — head-coaches style — by hiring four new faces to lead the program in the span of as many seasons. With that in mind, some college football pundits have dubbed the period from 2011-2014 as the one-and-done era.

First, there was Hugh Freeze who left for Ole Miss.

Next, Gus Malzahn exited after one season at A-State for greener pastures in the form of the Auburn Tigers.

With a comfortable lead late in the fourth quarter, Texas State experienced something it hadn’t enjoyed in a while: a worry-free final three minutes.

The Bobcats didn’t need a game-clinching defensive stop or a go-ahead score. Instead, Texas State watched as the final minutes bled off the clock during a 45-27 victory over Arkansas State on Thursday night inside Bobcat Stadium. The Bobcats could finally revel in a marque victory on a national-television stage in a game they needed to win.
