Outdoors: Late schooling time creates perfect opportunity to fish Lake Bastrop

By JIM DARNELL

Some of the most fun fishing of the year is happening right now on Lake Bastrop.

Every summer huge numbers of hungry largemouth bass gather in deeper water — often in front of the dam — and gorge themselves on schools of threadfin shad. When they drive the shad to the surface, a feeding frenzy happens.

Shad fly out of the water fleeing for their lives from the greedy bass. It’s quite a phenomenon of nature to witness. If you get the right lure into the melee chances are very good for a strike.

While Georgia Southern and Arkansas State garnered most of the attention around Sun Belt circles, the Bobcats quietly made their mark and sat amongst the top three in the conference in most offensive categories last season.

To kick off the season, the Bobcats travel to College Station on Nov. 13 to take on Texas A&M for the first time since 2008. The Aggies finished 23-10 last season and made the NCAA Tournament before being eliminated in the first round by Sun Belt school Little Rock (69-60).

There was a time — and it wasn’t that long ago — when Texas State didn’t know what to expect from its quarterbacks.

After all, early on in the 2013 season, head coach Dennis Franchione cycled through Tyler Arndt, Jordan Moore and eventually Duke DeLancellotti — in one game.
