Outdoors: Good to be back fishing stateside

JIM DARNELL

One of the delights that I missed most while in Africa for two months this summer was fishing the bays and flats near Aransas Pass.

I can get by without doing much bass fishing on hot inland lakes, but I love the coastal bay fishing. I missed zipping across skinny water in my speedy skiff.  I missed the salt spray on my lips.  I missed the squawking seagulls.  I missed the beauty of the pink Rosetta spoonbills.  I missed tailing redfish.

San Marcos stopped dreaming about the playoffs after last year’s game against Lockhart.

The dream became reality.

As soon as the team punched their ticket, the expectations changed since the Rattlers were no longer a rebuilding team punching above their weight.

Now in Class 6A, head coach Mark Soto’s team is looking to establish a legacy and turn the playoffs into routine for Rattler Football. San Marcos hit the field this week to open fall camp and usher in the next era.

High School Volleyball: Contreras shines despite season opening loss

San Marcos’ season is off to a rough start after Monday evening.

Despite 11 kills from senior Alex Contreras, the Lady Rattlers dropped their season and home-opener to the Bastrop Bears, 3-0 (25-15, 25-19 and 25-19) inside the Snake Pit.

A few hitting errors during the opening set left San Marcos playing from behind early. Despite being a team with eight seniors, last year’s senior-laden team meant there is still a lot of varsity inexperience in 2016. It showed early.

College Football: Bobcats training for a "title fight"

The regular season is a prized title fight.

That’s how head coach Everett Withers views it. The Bobcats may be knocked around, they’ll certainly throw a few punches of their own, but they can’t win or lose via knockout. It always comes down to a decision at the end of a 12-round match, or this case a 12-game season and Texas State wants to win by unanimous decision.
