College Athletics: Sun Belt enacts new regulations at spring meetings

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Even as the Sun Belt arrives at what commissioner Karl Benson called “a second full year of stable membership,” the league still adopted a few new regulations for the upcoming 2015-2016 academic year.

The conference enacted changes to its men’s basketball scheduling policy, increased the entry and exit fee for new and existing members and addressed the issue of cost of attendance during its annual spring meetings which wrapped up on Tuesday afternoon in Montgomery, Alabama.

The first-place Houston Astros are not exactly what you would expect to hear from anyone beyond the month of April.

Most preseason prognosticators probably thought Texas State and UL Lafayette would be squaring off on championship Sunday of the Sun Belt Tournament.

After all, the Bobcats and Ragin’ Cajuns occupied the top two slots in the conference’s preseason rankings.

And yet, for a myriad of reasons, Texas State and UL Lafayette have failed to meet those expectations.

The Rattlers are back at it again.

San Marcos strapped up their helmets and shoulder pads during a spring two-a-day session on Tuesday. The team went back to work this past week in preparation for its spring game on Friday, May 29.

The tone of these sessions has been set and the theme is simple: Earn your spot.

It has been six long months of offseason work for the Rattlers and by the time the offense and defense faced off to concludes Tuesday evening’s practice the competitive juices were flowing.
