High School Football: San Marcos wants to stayed focused on district title

Daily Record Sports

San Marcos wants to make a statement in District 14-6A.

“Just a statement that we came here to play,” senior linebacker Colby Vidrine said. “Definitely, a defensive statement that we don’t want people scoring on us that much.”

The Rattlers statement came through loud and clear last week when they defeated Austin Akins, 24-3, in their district opener. But head coach Mark Soto doesn’t want his team to become overconfident with four district games remaining.

College Football: UL Monroe is of the same mold as Texas State

Everett Withers and Brett Elliott made themselves familiar with UL Monroe (2-3, 0-2 in the Sun Belt) head coach Matt Viator last season.

There was a chance that James Madison would match up against Viator’s McNeese State team in the Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs so the two made sure to do some advanced scouting.

Withers actually played against Viator’s Cowboys back in 2008 when he was defensive coordinator at North Carolina. The two met up at the Sun Belt head coaches’ meetings back in the spring and had the same thought.

Sounds of Practice 10/12

Here are a few of the quotes from offensive coordinator Brett Elliott and defensive coordinator Randall McCray following Wednesday's practice.

Offensive coordinator Brett Elliott:

On the first quarter:

“We hadn’t started fast all season. Our guys executed, I’ve been saying all along that, if we execute, we’ve got a shot. I thought for the most part, the first three quarters we executed well, we didn’t finish some drives, but we were moving it."

Coach Speak: Del Valle

Daily Record Sports

Coach Speak will be an ongoing series where we get the prospective from San Marcos’ coaches on the week’s opponent.

San Marcos opened district play with a 24-3 win over Austin Akins.

The Rattlers travel to Del Valle to take on the Cardinals on Friday. Head coach Mark Soto said tackling was the key to San Marcos’ win over Akins and team will have to do the same against Del Valle.
