Every person has poetry within them, and the San Marcos Public Library would like to read yours. Through a new monthly poetry bulletin “When the River Speaks,” the SMPL invites San Marcosarea residents of any age to submit their original poetry to be collected into a monthly edition, the first of which is themed, “Everybody In!”

Through the poetry of movement, Brett Ishida of Austin’s own ISHIDA Dance Company invites audiences to question traditional forms of motion and storytelling with Faraway, So Close, an evening of contemporary dance. The show will premiere in Austin on August 13 and 14 at 8 p.m. at the Dell Fine Arts Center at St. Andrew’s.

Comedian and author Kelly Stone is no stranger to living a public life. For over a decade, she has been posting humorous quotes from her two sons, who are now 12 and 13. The result is her debut book, “Mom, What’s the Opposite of Guacamole?” which contains the humorous and often-oddly insightful observations of her boys.

This year, San Marcos organizations are coming together in a sense of community, commemoration and fellowship to host the first ever countywide Juneteenth celebration. The Dunbar Heritage Association, the Hays County Historical Commission, Cephas House and the Calaboose Museum will hold a series of events — some of which are already underway — to share the history and culture of Black Americans in our community.
