The Aqua Show: A burlesque tribute

Friday, August 24, 2018

An evening of delights inspired by the underwater shows of the past at Aquarena Springs is coming to Stonewall Warehouse on Friday, Sept. 14. The Aqua Show brings local burlesque and drag performers to the stage to entertain audience members and raise money for the Mermaid Society’s educational programs for children.

The fun will start when the doors open at 7 p.m. and a silent auction of works donated by local artists begins. When the show starts at 8 p.m., Atom Von Arndt will serve as emcee for an evening of performances by bold, funny and sexy entertainers drawing inspiration from the mermaid shows of days gone by. The lineup includes Frankie Blackheart, Taylor L’Amore, Ella Stryker, Isadora LaFae, Mickie Sinn, Tasha Fierse Kennedy, Blaise Ricin and Sunnii Rae.

First performed in 2016, The Aqua Show is now officially part of Mermaid Society SMTX’s SPLASH events. This year, 20 percent of ticket sales and all proceeds from the silent art auction will provide funding for emerging children’s initiatives by the Mermaid Society, such as “Talks with Maya the Mermaid” and other activities aiming to educate young students on the value of river stewardship and environmental responsibility. Sponsorship for The Aqua Show is provided by locally owned and operated businesses including Vagabond Vintage Clothing Store and Wake the Dead Coffeehouse.

"Mermaid Society’s Youth programming is designed to engage children’s natural curiosity and enthusiasm for art, nature and the world around them,” Mermaid Society Executive Director July Moreno said. “The traveling educational programs will help to introduce the idea of how children can become stewards of the river by combining science with fantasy. Children learn about non-point source pollution, and ecological conservation – focused on the river as a unique habitat in our planet – and inspiring socially and environmentally responsible behaviors."

General admission-standing room only tickets to The Aqua Show are $10. A limited number of reserved seating tickets are on sale for $15. VIP tables for two are available for $50 and include seating close to the stage and a signed event poster. Up to two additional seats can be added for $15 each. Tickets are available online

The Aqua Show is presented by Dark Matter Productions, a local production company dedicated to creating space on San Marcos stages for burlesque, performance art, dance and theater.
