Miss Beautiful San Marcos 2018 crowned

On Friday, June 8, the third annual Miss Beautiful Pageant took to the stage with Jupiter Brown as the host and 14 contestants competing for the title of Miss Beautiful SMTX 2018.

The Miss Beautiful Pageant is an annual celebration of beauty and poise for women with disabilities 18 years of age and older.

Kalene Spencer was crowned Miss Beautiful SMTX 2018 by the reigning 2017 Miss Beautiful SMTX Kia Davis.

The San Marcos Miss Beautiful title, like any title, doesn’t come without its own list of duties. Spencer will be on the Keep San Marcos Beautiful Veterans Day Parade float. She will also hand out awards at the Keep San Marcos Beautiful Volunteer Recognition Reception and, as her final duty, lead the Pledge of Allegiance at city council before the next Miss Beautiful is crowned.

Spencer received a $155 Visa gift card, a sash, crown and a bouquet, along with her new title of Miss Beautiful SMTX 2018.

Judges Elena Duran, Amy Cogdill, Gabi Perlinger and Daniel Montemayor scored the contestants throughout the pageant. Best Smile went to Jill Williams; Most Expressive went to Katie Hardegree; and Most Inspirational went to Hayley Trimble. They received a sash and a beach bag filled with accessories.

Third runner up was also awarded to Hayley Trimble. Trimble received a bouquet, sash and a $45 Visa gift card. Second runner up was awarded to Christina McGreal. McGreal received a bouquet, sash and a $65 Visa gift card. First runner up was awarded to Elsa Sanchez. Sanchez received a bouquet, sash and an $85 Visa gift card.

As a special guest appearance this year, Ms. Wheelchair Texas 2018, Angel Arredondo, spoke to the audience while the judges tallied their scores. Arredondo, a San Marcos resident, was born with a rare condition called Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC). She is an avid advocate for disability rights and a published author of the bilingual children’s book, “I Love My Red Wagon,” – soon to be a five-part book series –  that touches on her experience of being a child with disabilities and how her wagon contributed to not only her mobility but also her success as a motivated student and independent girl.

The pageant was made possible through generous sponsors Grande Communications, Embassy Suites San Marcos, Classic Tattoo and Ault & Ault Orthodontics.
