Walkers' Gallery presents 'Communication'

Friday, November 16, 2018

The Walkers’ Gallery at the San Marcos Activity Center invites the public to its reception for the  current exhibit, “Communication,” this Saturday, Nov. 17 from  5-7 p.m.

Invited to submit artwork in response to this theme, area artists brought a wide range of interpretations in multiple media from simple line drawings, cartoons and photography to elaborate assemblages and mixed media works.

The communication theme was inspired by a story told by artist Debangana Banerjee about her five year old daughter. Originally from India, the family has lived in San Marcos for nearly 10 years. Dual language Hindi and English, the daughter enjoys planting and gardening with the family gardener, Pedro, who speaks very little English. They work together, side by side, engaging in lively conversation, she in Hindi and Pedro in Spanish.

A  number of works by two internationally known artists, Deborah Faye Lawrence and Tom Phillips, are included in this exhibit. Both artists use actual words as artistic elements in their compositions. Lawrence, a collage artist based in Seattle, pieces together words and images, generally from magazines, to convey messages of social and personal commentary.

UK artist, Phillips, includes portraiture, sculpture and opera composition among his many creative endeavors. On display at the Walkers’ Gallery are limited edition prints from his series, “The Humument” in which he took a 3 cent Victorian novels and painted on the pages covering all but a series of words to create a poetic new narrative.

The reception will include the wonderful guitar music of Ike Eichenberg and light refreshments.

Exhibits at the Walkers’ Gallery are sponsored by the San Marcos Area Arts Council and the city of San Marcos, with support from the San Marcos Arts Commission and the Parks and Recreation Department.
