Now's the time to grab your camera or cell phone and go outside and take pictures of the beauty all around you. You might just win some money, or at least some recognition, for sharing them.

The Hill Country Photography Club, along with the Hays County Master Naturalists, are pleased to announce the opening of the 2018 Naturescapes Photography Contest and  Exhibition.

"Horse Browsing in Verbena" by Michael Penn Smith won the 2017 Award of Excellence.

The contest is designed to showcase the beauty of  Hays County and its surrounding counties including Comal, Guadalupe, Caldwell, Blanco and Travis counties.

To encourage the youth of our area to participate, there will be a special award presented for the best youth image. These youth entries will also  compete with all entries for other awards.

Cash awards will be presented in several categories including Best in Show, Best Youth, up to four Awards of  Excellence, and the Master Naturalists will present an award for the Best Natural Waterscape.

Photographers of all experience levels are encouraged to enter. And yes, cell phone images may be submitted.

"Lotus Blossom by Rose Epps won an Award of Excellence.

The contest is a juried show and this year the selections and winners for the show will be determined by award-winning nature photographer Earl Nottingham. Nottingham has been a wildlife photographer for Texas Parks and Wildlife for 18 years, during which time he has received numerous regional and national awards.

The contest is accepting entries now through June 25.

The selected images will be on display at the Walkers’ Gallery inside the San Marcos Activity Center from Sept. 8 to Oct. 26. Photos selected for the gallery show shall be matted and framed. Canvas and metal prints will also be allowed. An Artist and Awards Reception will be held at the Activity Center on Sept. 8, from 5-7 p.m. Art exhibits at the Walkers' Gallery are sponsored by the San Marcos Arts Council and city of San Marcos, with support from the San Marcos Arts Council.
