Book about Texas dives hits No. 1 on Amazon

“Texas Dives: Enduring Neighborhood Bars of the Lone Star State,” a book by local author Anthony Head, recently reached No. 1 on Amazon’s Hot New Releases under the category of Texas Travel Books.

The book — written by Head with photography by Kirk Weddle — chronicles and celebrates the resilience of local dive bars in Texas, including San Marcos’ own Showdown and Riley’s Tavern in nearby Hunter.

The publisher’s summary on Amazon calls “Texas Dives” a “witty and sympathetic portrayal…sure to become a bucket-list book for general readers, fans of Texana, and almost anyone who has ever ducked around to the corner pub for a quick drink.”

Head and Weddle launched “Texas Dives” with a 13-stop tour in which the author and photographer would revisit each of the dive bars mentioned in the book, starting with Riley’s Tavern on July 30.

Head will speak about his book and experiences on KZSM’s Bookmarked on Tuesday, Aug. 23 from 4 to 6 p.m. The broadcast will be livestreamed at kzsm.org. Afterward, Head and Weddle will travel to A Great Notion in Ft. Worth on Aug. 24; The Goat in Dallas on Aug. 25; Duddley’s Draw in College Station (to honor Bill Weiss) on Aug. 28; and Shorty’s Place in Port Aransas on Aug. 31.

In September, the tour will continue to Houston for a tribute to Alice’s Tall Texas at Johnny’s Gold Brick on Sept. 6 and Warren’s Inn on Sept. 7. On Sept. 13, they will hold a tribute to the Wizzard at Alibi in Galveston. Then, on Sept. 19, they will have a book signing at Book People in Austin. The tour will wrap up with a speaking engagement at Mynars Bar in West on Sept. 21; a signing at The Twig bookstore in San Antonio on Sept. 22; and will close at La Perla in Austin on Sept. 28.
