Mermaid Society SMTX seeks to raise environmental awareness
Sunday, April 17, 2022

Every year on April 22, people work together to make small-yet-significant improvements to our local environments. These efforts, combined with education about stewardship and conservation, add up to make a lasting impact on the world around us.

According to earthday.org, the commemoration of Earth Day is recognized as “the largest secular observance in the world, marked by more than a billion people every year as a day of action to change human behavior and create global, national and local policy changes.”

Mermaid Society SMTX joins in this global effort with their 4th Annual Earth Day Celebration.

The free event, which will be held from 12 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, at Wonder World Cave and Adventure Park, will feature Mermaid Society Storytime with Mermaid Maya and Friends, free Wonder World train rides for all attendees, a special performance by Crockett Elementary Choir and eco activities coordinated by the students from Texas State University Residential College and Service-Learning Excellence.

“We enjoy Earth Day so much because it gives us a chance to reach the community about the importance of taking care of our environment,” said Isabella Crosby, community outreach director for Mermaid Society SMTX.

Some of the eco-friendly Earth Day activities will include making mer-fetti, which is a river-safe version of confetti.

“Confetti is harmful to our river,” Crosby said, “so we want to try and showcase that there is a different way that we can have biodegradable confetti. It’s basically potpourri. It’s going to be flower petals cut up really small. We’ll be giving out little pouches to use in cascarones.”

Other activities include reusing plastic water bottles to make bird feeders and cartons and cereal boxes for birdhouses. Additionally, children will also decorate rocks and plant seeds in the Mermaid Society SMTX sunflower garden.
