Local nonprofit Together For A Cause is hosting a community-wide flea market on Saturday, Jan. 6 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help raise funds for their future charitable endeavors.

Together For A Cause was established in 2012 by locals with the intent to give back to the community. They raise money to donate to other nonprofits, charities and organizations that work within Hays County, give area students scholarships, host toy drives and collect school supplies for local children.

“All of the money that we raise from these fundraisers we use for scholarships, also we use for the Salvation Army, the Hays County Food Bank and families that need some kind of assistance – usually with medical bills or something like that,” Albert Vargas, a member and organizer, said “We just help where we can, that’s our goal is to help the community of San Marcos.”

Slick Vargas presents a check to Hays County Food Bank Development & Special Events Coordinator Eleanor Owen-Oshan to sponsor five families for Thanksgiving meal boxes.

Organizers of the flea market are still looking for vendors that would like to sell their items. Vendors can sell handmade items, gently-used items, furniture, baked goods, crafts and more. Spots are $15 and vendors can keep all profits from their sales. Money for vendor spot reservations will benefit Together For A Cause.

Michael Hernandez, a menudo cook-off champion, will also be selling his prizeworthy menudo for $8 a cup. All proceeds from the menudo will go towards Together For A Cause.

Together For A Cause is also the nonprofit that hosts the annual Diez y Seis Festival that celebrates Hispanic heritage and culture in San Marcos. Diez y Seis is their largest fundraiser of the year.

The community-wide flea market happens on the first Saturday of every month from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the empty lot next the the VFW on Hunter Road.
