The grassroots local organization Mano Amiga and the San Marcos Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (SMUUF) held a fundraising DACA Dinner at Cafe on the Square on Friday, Sept. 29, and raised $2,263.75.

Jeannie Lewis, one of the organizers, said, "The funds will go to help the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Dreamers) recipients pay for their $500 application fee to stay in the U.S., and to grassroots efforts to assist these young people and other undocumented residents."

Mike Dawoud, owner of Cafe on the Square, agreed to host the DACA Dinner at a cost of $25 per dinner, most of which went to the DACA cause. Some 65 people purchased dinners. There were also extra donations, a raffle, an art auction and live music.

Local elected officials attending the DACA Dinner were San Marcos City Council members Ed Mihalkanin, Jane Hughson, Lisa Prewitt and Melissa Derrick, as well as Justice of the Peace Maggie Hernandez Moreno.
