Hays County celebrates Night Sky Month with candlelight dining

Sunday, October 2, 2022

Hays County Friends of the Night Sky announced that many area restaurants, breweries, wineries and distilleries will be celebrating Hill Country Night Sky Month with candlelight dining and drinking on the weekend of the full moon, Oct. 8 and 9.

Establishments in Driftwood, Dripping Springs, Buda and San Marcos have already joined in with plans to mark the October Hunter’s Moon with candlelight in their outdoor seating areas.

The full list will be updated on HCFNS social media at @HaysNightSky as more join the celebration.

The 2nd annual Full Moon Candlelight Nights are being organized as part of Hill Country Night Sky Month taking place throughout October. The Hill Country Alliance coordinates the 3rd annual night sky month as a celebration of the region’s night skies and the hard work that Hill Country communities do to preserve it.

“The Hunter’s Moon during Night Sky Month offers a perfect time to call attention to the benefits of using outdoor lighting responsibly,” said HCFNS board member, Soll Sussman. “As the county continues to grow, it’s more important than ever to protect the dark and our view of the night sky. We appreciate the Hays County dining establishments that are helping call attention to Hill Country Night Sky Month.”

Hays County Friends of the Night Sky is comprised of concerned citizens who want to promote smarter lighting designed to improve visibility and safety at night, protect the natural night sky, and support individuals and communities in their work to receive recognition for their “dark sky” efforts. HCFNS offers education so everyone can learn about the consequences of light pollution and how to live better with a naturally dark sky.
