The Journey Continues: Mark DeLeon
Mark DeLeon’s journey has led to a destination of working with students — he reflects that the SMCISD goal for staff is to be energetic, professional and compassionate. He grew up as a pastor’s son in Bay City, Texas, and spent 18 years in law enforcement as a policeman in Houston.
Two college degrees later — a B.S. degree in criminal justice from Wayland Baptist University in 2003 and a M.A. in education and administration from Southwest Texas State University in 2005.
DeLeon first arrived at San Marcos CISD in 2009. He quickly became effective with all students. He is presently assigned as a San Marcos High School assistant principal and campus behavior coordinator with responsibilities in the areas of discipline, school safety, attendance and special education.
DeLeon's forte is communicating with troubled teens. He has a special rapport with students who have been labeled as "bad kids."
He believes that there is no such thing as a bad student and understands that many come from troubled homes. He has earned the reputation as an administrator who cares; and believes effective discipline done with love is caring.
On Aug. 31 DeLeon's life was interrupted by a very serious illness. He spent a total of 18 days in the hospital. The following are his takeaways from the illness:
1. This was a wake-up call in his life.

3. A reminder that a person’s relationship with God makes life precious.
4. God should always be first in our lives.
5. On the human side he asked, “why me Lord?” but on the spiritual side he knew God was with him. “God has a plan for my life.”
6. His life verse is:
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13
No one plans or wants to face a major illness; however, when one is walking in the valley of the shadow of death, it is comforting to know that the hand of God is on us and will guide us to green pastures and still waters. The Lord is DeLeon's shepherd.
He is married to Cassie Saxon, and they are parents of three children. He is a deacon at First Baptist Church on McCarty Lane, and has enjoyed teaching youth Sunday School classes and singing in the church choir.
This is the life journey of Mark DeLeon who feels blessed to be alive and is thankful to be able to continue in caring for students.
