Two San Marcos residents have come together to create a book that reinforces river care and encourages empathy. Author Marieta Hutchison has written the children's book "Mermaids Are Magical – You Can Be Too." The book is filled with illustrations from Jill Pankey.

"Mermaids Are Magical – You Can Be Too" is an expository book on how to become magical like mermaids – and merboys. It is written in rhyme and is anecdotal. The illustrations show ways of teaching joy, kindness and empathy. A melodic stanza throughout the book provides a song for remembrance and reinforcement.

Teacher resources are provided in back of book. In the introduction of the book, Hutchison has made mention of four experiences that birthed the book. Two of which are San Marcos related, volunteering to serve with the San Marcos Art Advocates and being introduced to Mermaid Society SMTX and the San Marcos Public Library’s program, 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten. Though the story is a global one, the author and illustrator have included shout-outs to San Marcos including some local endangered species and Coahuiltecan guardian animals. Challenge yourself and see if you can find them

Ten percent of book sales will be donated to the Youth Initiatives of Mermaid Society SMTX. The book is for sale at Paper Bear and Hutchison has donated a book that is available for checkout at the San Marcos Public Library. It is also for sale online.
